AKF started its operations in India in 1978, and today implements programs in both rural and urban areas across six states (Bihar, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi).
 
Project Details :
 
In partnership with the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), AKF has initiated an innovative pilot programme to promote the adoption of low carbon agriculture practices by smallholder farmers in three agro-ecological zones in the states of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. The three-year pilot initiative aims at establishing proof of concept that low carbon farming systems can enable the agriculture sector to become a net carbon sink, while at the same time enabling a shift to improved nutrition outcomes and reduced gender inequalities. Key programme interventions include the creation and strengthening of community institutions to enable the adoption of sustainable farming practices, promoting water use efficiency for a range of crops in target geographies, soil and water conservation, regeneration of common lands, promoting agro-forestry and farm forestry, reducing GHG emissions from livestock through the adoption of ration balancing, scaling-up the use of renewable energy, particularly for crop irrigation, and diversifying incomes for smallholder farmers through the development of sustainable enterprises (eg bio-pesticide manufacture, bee-keeping etc.). The programme also seeks to engage actively with the market to expand demand for low carbon agriculture products, contributing directly to increased incomes for smallholder farmers, and track and document emerging learning for policy dialogue. The empowerment of women farmers, and initiatives to strengthen agriculture-nutrition linkages through crop diversification are other key objectives. AKF will lead implementation in Uttar Pradesh and will work closely with other implementing partners in the selected geographies in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.
AKF is seeking to recruit an ambitious, energetic and hard-working Block Coordinator to lead the implementation of this innovative initiative at the block level (Chittaura/ Risia) in district Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh.
Position Summary:
 
The Block Coordinator – Low Carbon Agriculture programme, will be responsible for ensuring the effective implementation of project activities at the block level in 30 identified villages, supporting smallholder farming households to adopt low carbon agriculture practices (for land, water and livestock) and sustainable landscape management leading to inclusive economic growth.
The Block Coordinator will lead a team of field supervisors and community based paraworkers, providing regular mentoring and handholding support to ensure the implementation of a high quality programme,  and will report to the Program Officer (Agriculture, Food Security and Economic Inclusion), working under the overall leadership of AKF’s State Programme Manager. The position will be based at the block headquarters (Chittaura/ Risia) in district Bahraich.
 
Key Responsibilities
  • Drive the implementation of the Low Carbon Agriculture programme at the block level through operational planning, project management, identifying priorities, preparing implementation plans, and ensuring that project deliverables and targets at the block level are achieved within the agreed timelines and quality standards.
  • Lead a team of field supervisors and community-based paraworkers in the assigned block of district Bahraich with a focus on ensuring timely and quality of implementation of project activities, assessing impact on target beneficiaries, and facilitating collaboration and convergence with government programmes and other stakeholders.
  • Lead the formation of solar irrigation user groups and establishing systems for regular meetings, transparent accounting systems and collection of water user fee, and ensuring the equitable distribution of water for irrigation from the common source.
  • Facilitate solar irrigation group farmers to adopt innovative and sustainable agriculture practices in cereals, pulses, oilseed, and vegetables including water efficiency, catchment area development, agro-forestry and farm-boundary tree plantations, promoting bee-keeping, building water recharge structures and common land regeneration, promoting chemical free crop farming, solar powered crop storage and warehousing etc.
  • Lead the identification and capacity building of a cadre of community-based women animal health workers, building their capacity to provide preventive health services (vaccination, de-worming) and support the adoption of improved animal husbandry practices, emerging as entrepreneurs at the village level. In particular, build their capacity for sustained information dissemination regarding ration balancing, tracking adoption, leading to reduced carbon emissions from livestock rearing.
  • Build and maintain relationships with block and district government officials and stakeholders for alignment and leverage of project activities with government programs and interventions.
  • Undertake regular field visits to programme sites to assess, resolve and report on implementation challenges quality andprogress.
  • Assist the Livestock Coordinator and Marketing Coordinator and contribute towards the development of high-quality presentations, fact sheets, and other materials for effective external communications, positioning, and partnerengagement.
  • Facilitate and provide support to the project team in trainings and capacity building workshops to enhance the knowledge and understanding of farming households and community institutions on low carbon agriculture activities.
  • Organize planning meetings and project visits for internal or external groups, asrequired.
  • Support the implementation of the Programme Management Information System (Monthly/Quarterly/ Half-Yearly/ Annual MIS).
  • Provide technical input and support to the project team in undertaking construction, agricultural, livelihood and livestock activities along with building sustainable community institutions.
  • Be updated on innovations and best practices related to low carbon agriculture, and facilitate the adoption of best practices across programme areas.
  • Carry out any other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by theProgram Officer and State Programme Manager.
Qualifications and Skills Required
  • Post-graduate in Agricultural economics/ Horticulture/ Agro forestry/ Agronomy/ Forestry or graduate in Agriculture with MBA in Rural Development/ Rural Management from a reputed institution.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in implementing sustainable agriculture projects at the district or block level. Experience of managing a field implementation team will be an advantage.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English andHindi.
  • Ability to work in cross-functional teams across departments and institutions; needs to be comfortable dealing with ambiguity, as well as situational authority and leadership.
  • Solution-oriented, creative problem-solver, who can be versatile and is willing to work around obstacles.
  • An ability to lead and work in teams and set an example for high quality work is essential. Must be willing to work independently and tomulti-task.
  • Must share a sense of urgency about development and be committed to improving lives among India’s most marginalizedcommunities.
